Task D: Gluonic Excitations in QCD
Experimental Particle Physics
at Indiana University

Infrastructure

The Task D Group shares laboratory space with the High Energy Physics groups at Indiana University. We also have access to the departmental machine shop, complete with CNC mill and lathe equipment. We also utilize the high bay area in Swain, which is equipped with a crane, for construction of large scale detector equipment. Some photos of recent R&D equipment setups are shown below.

GlueX Time of Flight
Cosmic Ray Test Facility

This setup was developed for studying timing resolution of the GlueX Time of Flight detector. It includes a light tight box large enough to hold 2.5 m scintillator bars planned for the GlueX detector. Bars are read out with PMTs on each. The system is triggered using small scintillating paddles. Data acquisition and analysis is done through the rack-mouted system shown.

GlueX Electronics
Electronic Assembly Robot

The BeamWorks robotics unit shown to the right was used to build 100 prototype Cockcroft-Walton bases. This unit is installed in the clean room of Swain Hall - the IU physics building.

Helmholtz Coils
For Tests of Magnetic Shielding

These Helmholtz coils were built, tested and mapped by several undergrads. They are 1-m in diameter with a 1-m separation. They currently have a maximum central field of 90 gauss. Power supplies will be upgraded to deliver a 200 gauss field. These coils were used to study magnetic shielding of phototubes.

Local Compute Resources
60 dual-1.6 GHz compute nodes

This cluster is comprised of 60 dual-1.6 GHz compute node. It has a total disk capacity of approximately 7 TB. Nodes are connected through a 100T switch. The cluster is used for analysis of large E852 data sets and the development of parallel processing PWA algorithms for GlueX.

Indiana U. Compute Resources
AVIDD Compute Cluster

This is a 200-processor cluster at the IU Computing Center which is being used by the Task D group for data analysis. This facility was recently dedicated and the the Task D use for data analysis was showcased. Massive storage capability is also available to the group.
