Task D: Gluonic Excitations in QCD
Experimental Particle Physics
at Indiana University

Sam Adams
Undergraduate Student

Sam is a student in the IU STARS program and has been working with our group since August 2006. Sam worked with Chris to develop and efficient mechanical/optical design for coupling the PMTs to the back of the lead glass blocks for the GlueX forward Calorimeter. Sam is also working on data analysis from the CLEO-c experiment.

Jake Bennett
Graduate Student

Jake received his bachelors degree in physics in 2008 from Roanoke College. As an REU student at Cornell University during the summer of 2007 he worked with Ryan Mitchell on the analysis of rare radiative decays of χc mesons. Jake joined Indiana University and the group as a graduate student in the summer of 2008.

Chris Cude
Undergraduate Student

Chris began working with the Task D group during the spring of 2006. He is doing R&D work on the optical interface between lead glass blocks and PMTs for the GlueX Forward Calorimeter. Chris also worked on the readout optics used in the prototype tests of the GlueX Barrel Calorimeter.

  John Frye
Mechanical Technician/Designer

John received his degree in Engineering Technology from Purdue University. He joined the group in February 2008 and is working on the mechanical design and construction of the GlueX forward calorimeter

Mihajlo Kornicer
Postdoctoral Research Associate

Mihajlo joined the group in November 2006. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut where he worked with Prof. Richard Jones on the RadPhi experiment. Mihajlo is currently developing reconstruction algorithms for the GlueX forward calorimeter.

Ryan Mitchell
Assistant Scientist

Ryan joined the group in 2004 as a postdoctoral research associate. He was active in R&D work and beam tests for the GlueX Time of Flight system and played a key role in the analysis of 3π system in E852 data. In 2008 Ryan joined the graduate faculty as an Assistant Scientist. Currently Ryan is working on light meson and glueball physics at CLEO-c. Ryan is also principal investigator for an NSF-funded Physics at the Information Frontier proposal to develop modular PWA software that can be used for analysis of not only CLEO-c data, but also GlueX and E852 data.

Matt Shepherd
Assistant Professor

Matt is the principal investigator for the group's Department of Energy grant that supports research activities on the CLEO-c (Cornell) and GlueX (Jefferson Lab) experiments. Matt is interested in studying strong interaction physics and gluonic excitations at both CLEO-c and GlueX at Jefferson Lab. GlueX R&D efforts include designing and construction of the Forward Calorimeter. Matt is also working on GlueX software and the development of computing techniques to carry out amplitude analysis on large data sets.

Elizabeth Scherrer
Graduate Student

Elizabeth did her undergraduate work at the University of Rochester and joined the group in the fall of 2007. She is currently working on software simulations for the beam test of the GlueX forward calorimeter.

The group also collaborates closely with the following faculty and engineers at Indiana University.

Geoffrey Fox
Professor, Computer Science, Informatics, and Physics
Director, Community Grids Lab

Geoffrey collaborates with Task D and the GlueX collaboration on physics and computing issues. Geoffrey has had a long career in physics starting with his work on particle physics phenomenology and scientific computing at Caltech.

Paul Smith
Electronics Engineer

Paul coordinates the IU Physics Department Electronics Shop and has been involved in electronics R&D for E852, RadPhi, and GlueX including the design of Cockroft-Walton PMT bases and Flash ADCs for the GlueX Forward Calorimeter.

Thom Sulanke
Software Engineer

Thom maintains computing hardware and software infrastructure for both DOE Tasks A and D.

Adam Szczepaniak
Associate Professor

Adam is the director of the Nuclear Theory Center at IU and a member of the GlueX Theory Group. He collaborates with Task D on theoretical aspects of amplitude analysis.
